Canon G1

Summary

My first digital camera, well, the first I bought, (I’d already used a Sony Mavica) When the Canon G1 appeared, it was a revelation, small, compact, SLR-type controls, Swivel screen! :) Fantastic little camera which ticked most of the quest boxes...but not all. I took some great photos with it, and yes, it still works (although there are a few more hot pixels now).

Camera makers were releasing quite a few different concepts for where photography was going (Nikon Coolpix 990, Konica Yashica Samurai, Fujifilm Finepix 6800Z - all to be reviewed :) but the little G1 looked like a compact film camera. Film was at it's peak, but Digital was on the horizon.

Year of release

What was happening in 2000 – Y2K was avoided due to a lot of hard work in the server rooms by a lot of people. Tom Hanks and Wilson were stranded on an island in Castaway, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Pitch Black, Gone in 60 Seconds, Chicken Run, Me, Myself & Irene, The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, Space Cowboys, Best in Show, Lucky Numbers, Batman Beyond, Unbreakable, and X-men

The Sydney Olympics, and the Sony PS2 is released :)

There is a lot of similarity between the lens on the G1 and the Leica Digilux 1, and the Canon G2, the Epson PhotoPC 3000Z, Sony DSC-S70 – a well used lens perhaps? Also the Panasonic DMC-LC5 (which is the same as the Leica Digilux 1 per the Leica/Panasonic agreement).
